Tips on How To Maintain Your Boiler

Nothing is worse than a broken boiler in the winter — cold showers, sleeping in two jumpers, or escaping to your friend’s house for warmth. Your boiler ensures you have hot water and your household is warm. Keep your boiler working effectively, so it doesn’t break down, leading to costly repairs and a cold home. We’ve listed six tips on how to maintain a boiler. Let’s dive in!

Get an Annual Boiler Check Up

An annual inspection and cleaning from a licensed professional help keep your boiler in good condition. Here are signs on how to know when your boiler needs service:

  • Unusual noises
  • Degraded performance
  • Soot and corrosion stains
  • Abnormal smells
  • Unusual noises

An expert checks your boiler’s vital components, like the flame sensor, heat exchange, and burner assembly, to ensure everything is in sync.

Check Water Quality

A boiler works properly if the water is free from oil residue or debris. But, if the water quality is poor, it might take a toll on your boiler. Dirty water can also lead to scaling. So, check the gauge for any signs of a dirty boiler. If you find any problems, you must hire a pro to help out.

Perform a Powerflushing

Powerflushing is a deep cleaning of central heating systems and radiators that uses chemicals to flush out the rust, sludge, and other debris that settles in pipes, boilers, and radiators. Cleaning the sludge out of your radiators and the central heating system helps prevent dirt from damaging or corroding your system. You need power flushing services if your boiler is increasingly noisy.

Inspect for Drips and Leaks

Ensure you regularly check for water drips or leaks around the pipes and the boiler. Corroded pipes are prone to dripping and leaking, showing that your boiler is due for a change. Plus, your boiler can leak if the pressure is extreme. So, monitor the pressure gauge too. Unfortunately, in most cases, there is little you can do to fix a drip or a leak other than contacting a pro.

Run Your Boiler During Summer

Leaving your central heating system inactive during the summer isn’t recommended. When boilers remain inactive for a long, the system might develop blockages and become stagnant, leading to breakdowns and issues. So, run your boiler at least twice during the summer to prevent breakdowns that might shorten its lifespan.

Perform Visual Checks

Treat your boiler how you would treat a new car — inspect it regularly for visible signs of tear and damage like a yellow flame, congested vents, sooty marks, and leaks. If you’re worried about a leak that you can’t spot, look at your pressure gauge. If it’s less than a bar, the pressure has dropped low, which might signal an out-of-sight leak.
